The urban dimension is our destiny.
With the pandemic behind us, cities are already facing complex challenges: from the climate emergency to mobility. From the risks of technological innovation to social imbalances.
Yet, in continuous experimentation, the city pushes for solutions. Between trend reversals and new scenarios, anticipating the future means providing answers to unprecedented questions but also to structural issues.
→ Technology, activism, new work and social demands, spaces that become empty and others that repopulate. Between people who choose to escape and people who stay, in order to explore new dimensions of urban living..

#1 Urbanising AI
KEYWORD
Artificial Intelligence
New technologies
Urban Innovation
City
Paris
What will be the role of AI in urban transformation processes? What are the risks of a technology that has yet to reveal its full potential? The application of artificial intelligence in the urban context opens the debate to a series of ethical questions that require a stance to be taken: what happens if technological evolution comes to impose a limit on citizens' freedom?
In a heated and evolving debate, there are those who work to humanise the coldness of the algorithm and preserve individual choices. A radical position that questions the concept of the smart city and proposes a multidisciplinary approach to create a link between AI and collective wellbeing.
GUEST OF FUTURE URBAN TRENDS @ OGR TECH 2024
Urban AI is the world's first think tank investigating the relationship between Artificial Intelligence, new technologies and urban contexts. A multidisciplinary group of researchers, civil servants, start-ups and innovators formed with the aim of updating the concept of smart city.
The research work is financed by some leading companies —Nova Veolia, Leonard, Novaxia, Total, IBM, GFI and Sorbonne— and observes the application of artificial intelligence in different metropolises around the world to understand how AI can contribute to the creation of dynamic, inclusive and environmentally friendly cities. In one word: sustainable. città dinamiche, inclusive e rispettose dell’ambiente. In una parola: sostenibili.
#2 Infinite Architecture
KEYWORD
Circular architecture
Design
3D Printing
City
Amsterdam
To understand how the construction industry is changing, we need to look at those who are already creating top-quality furniture and architectural designs using completely recycled materials..
A challenge that some companies have accepted with the aim — or the promise — of revolutionising the way we make furniture, facades, flooring and walls. Companies such as Aectual, by fully exploiting the capabilities of XL 3D printers and using waste or plant–based materials, can significantly reduce the emissions associated with the production of furniture. A production loop that, thanks to the possibility of remodelling objects already in use, creates a potentially infinite circular supply chain.
GUEST OF FUTURE URBAN TRENDS @ OGR TECH 2024
From Amsterdam, Aectual is the pioneer in the realisation of special architectural projects. The 3D printer — the only one that works remotely and without accessing servers — can print at up to half a metre per second, producing beautiful and at the same time sustainable elements.
Sustainable because only recycled or plant-based materials are used in the production process: the philosophy is to make durable objects that can be processed and transformed potentially indefinitely. A true revolution for the construction industry, today among the most impactful in terms of production of waste materials, greenhouse gas emissions and aggressive extraction policies.
#3 Floating Urban Farming

Urban resilience
City
Rotterdam
Proximity to seas and rivers has always been a key element in the history of urban evolution. Today, this connection is taking on a new meaning: can we actually consider urban waterfronts as a resource for zero-kilometre food production?
The success of some courageous enterprises, such as the Floating Farm in Rotterdam, seems to give us an unequivocal answer. The idea of moving farming and breeding within the city limits responds to several challenges — such as reducing the environmental impact and waste associated with the supply chain. But that is not all. This relocation of production locations may give rise to a new generation of more attentive and aware consumers..
GUEST OF FUTURE URBAN TRENDS @ OGR TECH 2024
Ambition equals replicability. The Floating Farm was born in Rotterdam, where 90% of the urban area is below sea level. Peter Van Wingerden, one of the founders, explains that the idea behind the project is to be able to produce food in those places in the world where agricultural land is absent or unsuitable.
It is the beginning of a journey that aims to improve the supply chain in cities, and to export a new model of high-tech circular agriculture. Partners in the project include Microsoft and TuDelft, who saw the potential of a self-sufficient, high-tech management model early on.
#4 New City States
KEYWORD
Experimental urbanism
Startup cities
Public private partnership
City
Zurigo
The New City-State phenomenon is in full swing, a post-medieval evolution inspired by the uniqueness of Hong Kong, Singapore and the utopian experiences of ephemeral states, including the evocative Burning Man.
Today, this trend is merging with technology, from the creation of cryptocurrency and DAO-based communities to the bold urban initiatives of Alphabet (Google) and Tesla.
The opportunity to relive the dream of free and autonomous urban communities is married with new technological frontiers, paving the way for a future where freedom and autonomy define the tissue of our cities.
GUEST OF FUTURE URBAN TRENDS @ OGR TECH 2024
Akon City, Oceanix, The Line, Toyota Woven City. Recently, there has been a lot of talk about projects —some credible, others a little less so— that announce the creation of experimental cities in which technological innovation drives urban development processes. Next Generation Village has the same ambition but with a more concrete, collaborative, multidisciplinary approach.
A vision of urban community that starts from hi-tech solutions to imagine new monetary and governance systems, but also an update in the dialogue between public and private. Scientists, economists, designers, and innovators: all driven by the ambition to build a truly future-proof city.
